Homeschool Parent Guide

You bring the encouragement. We help you find learning resources and a routine that works for your family.

1. Find a comfortable starting point

Try a few short activities in reading, writing, and math. Notice what your child can do independently, what needs a model, and what feels frustrating. Choose resources at the appropriate skill level; different subjects may need different levels.

2. Choose materials with a purpose

  • Write down two or three skills to practice this week.
  • Review the product description and any available previews before buying.
  • Check whether the item is a digital download or a physical product.
  • Gather the workbook, paper, pencils, books, and simple hands-on supplies.

Start small. A targeted resource is easier to use consistently than a large stack of unrelated activities.

3. Teach one small step at a time

  1. Connect: Explain what you will practice and link it to something familiar.
  2. Model: Show an example while explaining your thinking.
  3. Practice together: Complete one activity side by side.
  4. Try independently: Offer a manageable task and give help as needed.
  5. Reflect: Ask your child to explain, show, or draw what they learned.

4. Make room for different needs

Offer a visual list of the day’s activities. Reduce the number of questions while keeping the learning goal. Use larger writing spaces, hands-on objects, short instructions, and breaks as helpful. Let your child demonstrate understanding in different ways when the task allows.

For multiple children, share a read-aloud or project and adjust the response: one child can draw, another can label, and another can write a paragraph.

5. Keep a simple learning record

Record the date, resource or activity, skill practiced, and level of support. Save occasional work samples. Use these notes to plan the next week.

  • Independent: Completes the skill without help.
  • With support: Completes it after prompts or a model.
  • Revisit: Needs another approach or more practice.

This is a parent-kept record; entries are not saved to an EPNL student account.
